What We Grew Together
On September 17th, I hosted a collaborative art project at The SEED. Leading up to the event, I fabricated and installed a tree that would become the foundation for a community-created work of art.
The project grew from an idea I had earlier in the season: to plant a figurative seed and watch it grow, quite literally, into a tree with the help of the community. I wanted the artwork to become more than something people simply viewed. I wanted it to change through participation, carrying a little piece of everyone who contributed. More than 30 people joined me on a misty Thursday evening to paint leaves, write words of affirmation, share ideas and connect. One by one, those individual contributions became part of something larger.

Through the process, I connected with members of the community and friends from Fordian Media, HeyStamford, Mill River Park and RiseUP for Arts. The evening reinforced the idea behind the project itself: when people contribute something of their own, we can grow something together. My dream of cultivating something beyond a container full of art was met. The SEED became a place not only to display artwork, but to create it together.
